Despite its varied prevalence, chronic Hepatitis Delta represents a major health burden all over the world. Further research to understand underlying biological mechanisms, pathogenesis and clinical trials to improve the available treatments are urgently needed. The prevalence of hepatitis Delta in countries that could afford this research is very low, making it hard to get enough patients to be able to draw conclusions. In those countries where Hepatitis Delta is endemic the needed resources are lacking.
